Henrik Frisk's Pli at Kopasetic Festival 2009 (3)

Here's another clip from the October 1 concert at KOPAfestival 2009. This is Mary McCready's song Singin' the Blues inspired by Ticky's version. Almaz Yebio is the featured vocalist here along with Morten Carlsen who starts the take, and Samuel Hällqvist who takes a guitar solo in the middle. This version ends with Jakob Riis's laptop solo.

I think Marja-Lisa, the soprano in the performance, is doing a wonderful job and I truly enjoy listening back to what we did with this fantastic piece of art. This is a video from the same concert as this previous post. Here a quartet formed out of the ten piece band (me on tenor, Samuel Hällqvist on guitar, Nils Ölmedal on bass, and Peter Nilsson on drums) is performing my piece Friday Intro. As is hinted at by the title Friday Intro, is an introduction to another piece (Friday 13/3) which we played immediately following this one in the concert. I'm really impressed by the way the rhythm section plays the rubato time yet keeping up with the relatively swift harmonic progression.

This is a video from the premiere of my band Pli. The concert was held at Victoriateatern in Malmö and features some of my favorite musicians. This tune is an arrangement and re-composition that I did of the jazz standard Like Someone in Love onto which we superimpose the original song by Jimmy van Heusen. The solo in the middle is a trio with Sten Sandell on piano, myself on tenor and Peter Nilsson on drums.

Henrik Frisk's Ooko

This is a recording we did with my band Ooko in Malmö early on February 15, 2009. Some free impro and some tunes, some acoustic and some electronic. The very talented musicians Katrine Amsler (piano and keyboards) and Michala Ostergaard-Nielsen (drums and percussion) are certainly worth a much wider recognition and they can be heard in bands such as David's Angels and Television Pickup.

Repetition Repeats all other Repetitions and Symphonie Diagonale

This is a recording of the version of my piece for Stefan Östersjö, Repetition Repeats all other Repetitions made for the classic avant garde film Symponie Diagonale by Viking Eggeling. Stefan and I produced this version in early 1997 in a tight collaboration.

This version has been performed by Stefan on numerous occasions in Sweden, UK and USA.

etherSound - performance at ICMC 2008

This is a performance of my interactive improvisation environment etherSound (read the programme note) at ICMC 2008 in Copenhagen. The performance took place at Huset - a small concert space in the centre of Copenhagen.

The sounds that are a result of received SMS' are easily identified; they have a bell like character in combination with a stuttering speach like sound. The first message arrives 10:15 into the concert. As can be seen on the video a small instruction on how to participate was projected on the wall behind the stage. Unfortunately, an this is my mistake, the instructions were too short. Due to this half of the messages received during the performance were empty and didn't result in any sounds being enerated. However, the messages that did have content have a clear impact on the music (note in particular the message that ends the concert).

Hanoi Concert October 2006

This is a video recording of the first performance of my piece The Six Tones written in close collaboration with the two Vietnamese master musicians Than Thuy and Ngo Tra My and the Swedish guitarist Stefan Östersjö for Dan Bau, Dan Tranh, Banjo, e-bow, 10-stringed guitar and computer. The piece is closely related to my solo piece written for Stefan, Repetition Repeats all Other Repetitions. Parts of Repetition... are transcriptions of recordings the first sessions Thuy, My, Stefan and myself had in Malmö in the Spring of 2006.

Repetition Repeats all other Repetitions

This is the version that Stefan premiered at the opening concert of the MusicAcoustica 2006 festival in Beijing on October 23. This recording however was made in Malmö, in the composition studio at the Malmö Academy of Music. It should be noted that this is only one, and the first, version of this piece. It's a collaborative project between myself and Stefan and it has just started. The next performance will be in Malmö on December 10 at Jeriko.

Concert at CRMA, Stanford

On April 9 I played a concert together with Per Anders Nilsson at CRMA at Stanford, Palo Alto in California, US. This was the last concert in a series of six concerts that we did together during the spring.

I am playing saxophone and laptop and Per Anders is playing laptop. We are both generating material as well as processing each others outputs. Listen to the full concert either streaming (requires a minimum bandwidth of 128 kbps) through QuickTime or RealOne by downloading the corresponding media file or download the mp3 encoded files. There are six tracks altogether. Depending on your system you may have to force QuickTime to open the SMIL file by right clicking and choosing "open with QuickTime" or similar. Please let me know if you are having trouble playing these files.

Saxophone and computer

In January I did three solo saxophone & laptop concerts in Sweden. The following two track are from the concert at Artisten in Gothenburg on January 13. In these tracks, the only input to the computer except for what I play is a pedal that I use to control start and stop. All other parameters that control the synthesis, sampling, playing and spatialisation are derived from what I play.

Malmö Saxophone Quartet

The first recording I will make available here is a recording I did a few weeks ago together with soprano and baritone saxophonist Andreas Andersson. We started a duo a while ago which we call MSQ (Malmö Saxophone Quartet). The name obviously doesn't refer to the number of musicians but rather to the fact that, between the two of us, we play soprano, alto, tenor and baritone.
We recorded some standards and some more freely improvised stuff with the ambition to explore the term free in the context of improvisation. Some of the discussions we had leading up to this recording will be reflected in my diary.
